Kaleidoscope Workshop Update

I’m always more a carrot kind of a girl than a stick kind of a girl, and so to tempt me into a bout of serious machine quilting, which really is not my most favourite thing in the world, I fashion myself a fine carrot!
That carrot is a beautifully cut, folded and pressed piece of straight-cut French binding, already to reward me when the quilting is done. My favourite part of making a quilted piece is the binding of it – pity it doesn’t happen more often!

So if I fast forward a few hours, here is a detail showing the nice pointy end of the runner, and some pretty neat binding if I say so myself! The vermicelli quilting is continuous line, and not too difficult on a narrow piece of work like this, and I quilted in the ditch for all the blades of the Dresden Plates. If I ever made it again, I would probably quilt all over everything.

Here it is, all done, on my dining room table. It won’t stay there, because the cat will think it’s there for her to sleep on, and I’m not having that!

This is Janet’s work, and she chose to make her version with a Moda Jelly roll, called “Oakhaven”, which came from Sunflower Fabrics stock of goodies.

Trish has made terrific progress with hers: her fabrics didn’t come from Sunflower, she picked them up from a show, adding in some extra light shades which the roll lacked. A very nice combination…

I always love to see students being brave with colour, and putting things together creatively and well from their stash, and this is exactly what Janice has done, bringing a breath of fresh air to the Sunflower Fabrics Cabin!

All in all, this was a nice little adventure which we all enjoyed as a group and individually. And it will be great in the coming weeks to see the group’s quilts bloom and grow. I would like to try some size and colour variations, making a scrappy version with more thought about making the colour sequences speak volumes, and on a smaller scale.
